This will be the last opening article that I write for the Parish News. Many of you are aware that I plan to retire November 1m 2008 My last official Sunday will be October 26th.
I have been privileged to be your parish priest for 33 of the last 34 years, and by the time I retire I will have been Rector for 31 1/2 years. I have been humbled and overjoyed to be a part of this special parish family. I treasure the memories of clergy and lay people, staff and parishioners who have made this a caring place to be.
We will talk more in the weeks ahead about the very special folks who have been a part of making this a sacred place for us all. I thank you for the way you have welcomed my family and cherished each with your love.
Our vestry has been given the assurance of Bishop Councell that the interim clergy who will lead you through the process of the coming month will do their best to aid and support the wardens and vestry in this transition.
A change brings new opportunities to discover the power of God's love in a parish. Many parishes have had frequent leadership changes and others, such as ours, have not. Therefore I want us to be aware of several very important rules and guidelines that must be followed. There are guidelines for every Parish when a rector retires.
*The outgoing Rector may not do any baptisms, weddings, or funerals in the parish for three years. *The former rector can return occasionally after three years only at the invitation of the new rector. *The former rector may not be consulted on parish business. That is the sole province of the interim priest and eventually the rector, warden and vestry.
*These rules and others are important because the new leadership will only be effective through good, hones communication. The new leadership at all levels will need your prayers, your care, your understanding and your support. *Our Deacon, Kathie DeJohn will need all the help, love and support you can give her in this important period of transition.
Lastly, the greatest compliment you can pay me is to be thankful for where we have been and be welcoming, joyful and supportive of the interim rector and eventual new rector.
Thank you for blessing my ministry,
|

We all knew the day would come. Didn't mean we would like it. Our dearly loved Father J. Rodney Croes will be leaving us at the end of October to begin his well-deserved retirement. He will celebrate his final Holy Eucharist service with us on Sunday, October 26, at 10:00 a.m. It will be an emotional and memorable occasion. Mark your calendars.
Father Rod became the rector of St. Peter's in May, 1977. He had been ordained in this parish both as a deacon, in April, 1974, and as a priest, on December 14, 1974. He remained here for two years as a curate and assistant. In 1976 he left to become Rector at Grace Church in Linden, but after one year, Rod was called back here to become our Rector, the position he has held with amazing dedication, grace, and compassion for thirty-one years.
Father Rod says his call to the ministry was a gradual process. After graduating from Rutgers, he joined the Air Force where he served for four and a half years, earning the rank of Captain. He tells us that both within and outside the military he had a number of "helping" experiences that supported his call to become an ordained minister. He graduated from the Philadelphia Divinity School in 1974.
The call to return to St. Peter's as our Rector was a happy one for him. He has found our parish to be a rich blend; an ethnic racial and economic mix of people who have a great deal of respect for each other. Fr. Rod says that at St. Peter's he has had a blest journey of God given surprises. He believes we need to be able to laugh at ourselves while being serious about what faith enables us to do. "Church is a vehicle that encourages us to live a Christian life as much as we can," he tells us. He holds it a privilege to help people see that God absolutely loves them and to find the good in themselves.
In retirement, Fr. Rod plans to "chase grandchildren, sail, and catch up with cousins." He modestly hopes to be remembered for leaving this place a little better than he found it. We will remember his years among us for so much more than can ever be listed here. He may leave our sight and our services, but he will stay in our hearts, minds, and prayers always. Well done good and faithful servant. Be well, be happy, be blessed.
We will honor him with a retirement dinner the afternoon of October 26th. Details will be forthcoming in a mailing to you. We hope you can be with us.

It must be the season to retire. Not only is Fr. Rod leaving us, but Ann Larmonie, who has served this parish for twenty-one years as bookkeeper and Treasurer, will be retiring at the end of September.
Ann has thoroughly enjoyed her years with us, finding work in a parish office a great experience. She tells us that she became aware of so many things that are normally not seen by most parishioners and has been amazed and moved by the people and their stories that have passed through the office. And she has witnessed first-hand the untiring work done by our clergy.
A member of our parish since she was a child, Ann has a background in banking. She worked for nearly twenty years for Chemical Bank in NYC starting as a teller and rising to the position of supervisor under the director of training.
She will be remembered not only for her work in the office, but also for all the extra things she did, especially arranging many trips over the years. As an example, in the 1990s she ran four trips to Las Vegas as fund raisers for the church. She also arranged for a number of bus trips to places like Williamsburg, VA, and St. Michael's, MD. Ann considers her most memorable trip the bus trip to North Carolina to visit with Father Hodge, a long-time friend of Fr. Rod and this parish.
Retirement Luncheon: We will be honoring Ann with a luncheon in the Parish House on September 14 at 11:30 a.m. immediately following the 10 a.m. service. There will be a catered buffet, and the ticket price ($25 adult, $8 child) covers both the meal and a gift. Please mail checks made out to St. Peter's Episcopal Church to Joan Yaremko, 68 Linden St., Fords, NJ 08863. You may also call her at 732-738-7486 or see her on Sunday after the service. Please make reservations ASAP but no later than September 7. The caterer needs the count.

Wednesday Evening Service
|
|
|
Our Wednesday evening service will resume on September 17th at 6:45 p.m. This midweek Holy Eucharist began several years ago, and has a small but growing number in attendance. The smaller group allows for greater participation in the service through readings and shared meditations. We invite you to join us any Wednesday as listed in the calendar.

A less than one minute Stewardship Meditation
"The question is not 'How much of what is mine should I give to God?' The question is 'How much of what is God's can I in good conscience keep for myself?'
The question is not 'Am I able to give?' The question is "Am I willing to give?'
The question is not 'How much money does the Church need?' The question is 'How much do I need to give to feel right about what I am doing?'
The question is not 'Can I?' The question is 'Will I?'"

This year our Blessing of the Animals is scheduled for the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, September 28th. Once again it will be time to gather your beloved pets and bring them to St. Peter's to be blessed in connection with the observance of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Our Animals add so much to our daily lives. This annual blessing is a way to demonstrate how much they are appreciated.
The service is held outside in the Parish House parking lot unless the weather is uncooperative, in which case it is moved indoors. The annual event is greatly anticipated by all animal lovers--adults and children alike. If they wish, children may also bring a favorite stuffed animal to be blessed. Plan to be with us to share a joyful service of thanksgiving for these special creatures of God's creation.

Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 in the Parish House. New members are always welcome to join. The first two dates are September 3rd and October 1st. The organization raises funds to support parish programs and activities. The ever-popular gift auctions are scheduled for September 21st and October 19th. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the auction starts at 6:00.
BUS TRIP Ann Larmonie is again arranging for the Mothers' Guild to sponsor a bus trip to Atlantic City on October 12th. This popular trip departs from our parking lot at noon and returns approximately 10:00 p.m. The casino destination is yet to be determined, but the cost of the trip is $25. Space fills up quickly, so make your reservations with Ann in the parish office early. Any good luck!

Social Concerns Commission
|
|
The Social Concerns Commission will start off the season by holding its first meeting on Monday, October 6, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish House. At this meeting we will start our preparations for the Thanksgiving Food Drive and look for new ways in which we can better support our parish families and the community. Your presence and ideas are alway welcome. For further information about the commission, contact Fr. Rod at (732) 826-1594 or Betty Crews at (732) 442-3662.
Thanksgiving Food Drive: Starting in September we will collect non-perishable food items such as pasta and sauces, pancake mix, syrup, soups of all kins, tuna fish, cranberry sauce, gravy, cereals, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, chocolate syrup, cocoa, peanut butter and jelly. Monetary donations in the amount of $15.00 are welcome and will be used to purchase food certificates. Turkeys and oven stuffers are also needed. Your contributions can be dropped off at the Parish House during office hours, Monday thru Friday. Non-perishable items can be left in the church vestibule on Sundays.
Salvation Army Care House: Over the summer we continued to support the Salvation Army Care House on a monthly basis, and I must add that the men at Care House look forward to our coming back to prepare the meal - thanks to our excellent cook. I take this opportunity to thank the member of th Social Concerns Commission who so willingly came out on those hot summer evenings to support this very important ministry.
The Social Concerns Commission members extend their sympathy to the Krasse family on the death of Ronald Krasse. Ron was a long time member of this Commission and actively participated in all our activities until his health no longer permitted him to do so. We are thankful for the time we shared with him and for his commitment to the Social Concerns Commission.

No one needs to be told that the current economic situation is the worst we have faced in years. And we all know that hard times fall hardest on those least able to deal with them...those who have little or nothing. So more than ever, those of us who are fortunate enough to have enough need to think about giving to others. We ask you once again to open your grateful and generous hearts by contributing to the In-Gathering on Sunday, October 19th.
Baskets will be set out at our services for donations of non-perishable food items (canned goods and dry foods) which will be used by the Social Concerns Commission to fill Thanksgiving baskets that are delivered in November. Sunday School children can also participate by bringing a food donation with them to class that day. Items needed are pasta, canned or jar sauces, canned vegetables, canned or jar gravy, cereals, peanut butter, jelly, tuna fish, macaroni and cheese, stuffing, cranberry sauce, canned potatoes (white and yams), pancake mix, pancake syrup, etc.
You have been very generous in the past. Please continue to help in this effort. Thank you in advance!

Looking Ahead to Annual Bazaar
|
|
Our annual holiday bazaar, which is a major fund-raising event for the parish, is scheduled for November 8th and 9th this year. The new theme is "City Scapes." As always, there will be crafts for sale, basket raffles, great food, and an indoor "yard sale."
Anew feature, a "cookie walk," is planned. You will be able to create your own cookie assortment by choosing how many of what kind you would like to purchase and be charged on a per pound basis. Of course, for this to be successful we will need many, many cookie bakers. P;ease consider dusting off your best cookie recipe and making a contribution.
Additionally, volunteers are always needed for a variety of purposes. Please contact Barbara Jankowski at 732-721-8206 or Elaine Leiter at 732-738-4138 to volunteer or get more information, and check the next issue of the Parish News for further details

Donation Gratefully Acknowledged
|
|
|
For a second year, we are please to acknowledge a donation of $1500 received from the Priory of St. George of the Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem, popularly known as the Knights Templar. This charitable Christian organization sponsored a fund-raising dinner to benefit St. Peter's at the Barge last spring. Our parish member filled a number of tables along with member of the Order. Again, we extend our thanks to the members of this organization for their generosity.

Greetings in the name of Christ, The Youth Group of St. Peter's Episcopal Church was very active during the late spring and summer months. We presented Mother's and Father's Day tributes written by the group members. Sharee Daniel made and sold Mother's Day and Father's Day cards.
On June 8, we held a car wash and a trash and treasure sale as fundraising activities. Thank you to all who supported those efforts. We again hosted the annual picnic. i would like to thank the youth group, the parents, the vestry, and the parishioners for their assistance and participation. Additionally, thanks go to local anks and municipal departments that donated goods and service.
The Carty-Gumbs-Suozzo-Adelson-Rubino Youth Group Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Justin Gaspar, who will attend Penn State, and Christopher Suozzo, who will be going to Kean University. Thanks to Eliza Smak and Betty Crews for generous donations to this scholarship.
On August 2 and 3 we spent a delightful weekend in the Poconos at the Durando family's summer home. A wide variety of activities included a hike and a day spent at Promise Land Lake which was perfect for canoeing and paddle boating. We thank our hosts for a wonderful time.
Upcoming: Our members will serve as hosts and helpers for participants at the Hand-in-Hand Festival for people with disabilities which takes place on September 28. In October we will sponsor a memorial service at St. Peter's for victims of family violence. We will be joined by the members of the police department's Domestic Violence Response Team at a 10:00 a.m. service.
Again, we thank you for supporting us in our activities, Yours in Christ's love, E. Dorothy Carty-Daniel

Celebrating Fifty Years of Service
|
|
Editor's Note: At the 10:00 a.m. service on June 22, we recognized Butch Bryson for his fifty years of service to this parish as acolyte, crucifer, choir member, and acolyte master. He was presented with a framed resolution and a silver cross.
I would like to start by giving thanks to God for giving me the health and strength to have been able to do this work for 50 years. I would also like to thank Father Rod, Deacon Kathie, the Vestry, the choir, and all the members of St. Peter's Church for this recognition.
I wish my Mom were here to see this, but unfortunately she passed away two years ago. She was responsible for bringing me to church every Sunday when I was a child. I remember telling her that someday I wanted to be up there, and pointed to the choir and altar. However, we soon left for Aruba to join my Father, and I stayed there until I was twelve. When I returned, I joined the choir.
Now here's the tricky part. I don't know if Canon Boyd heard me hit some bad notes while singing or if he saw something in me that I did not see in myself, but he approached me and told me he wanted me on the altar with him. That was the biggest honor I ever had in my life up to that point, to be asked by Canon George H. Boyd who was like a Father figure to all of us. Maybe that is why I am still here today.
I spent four years in the Air Force and was stationed in Dover, Delaware, so I was able to attend church every Sunday. There were some people who never knew that I was in the military.
